The series shows a 2020 UK commercial-radio revenue figure of £577.1 million, followed by £720.1 million in 2021 and £740.1 million in 2022. The figures are not a universal measure of all audio advertising, because commercial radio is narrower than the broader audio categories reported later.
Digital Radio Advertising and Local Media Revenue
U.S. radio-industry digital sales reached $1.9 billion in 2023, with reported growth of 6.8%. Digital sales represented 21% of total U.S. radio ad revenue in that period, according to the Radio Advertising Bureau.
The same 2023 benchmark distinguishes stations and market clusters:
- The average U.S. radio market cluster generated more than $2 million in digital sales.
- A small-market station averaged $82,835 in digital sales.
- A large-market station averaged $1.2 million in digital sales.
- The average small-market cluster made $364,426 in digital sales.
- The average largest-market cluster made $4.8 million in digital sales.

The Borrell/RAB benchmarking figures are estimates rather than medians or audited industry totals. They also use different units—station and cluster—so the averages should not be treated as like-for-like station comparisons.
A second U.S. benchmark reports that sites with $1 million or less in digital revenue averaged 8.5% growth in 2023, while sites with more than $10 million averaged 3.6% growth. Through Q3 2023, eight public radio groups ranged from -1% to nearly 17% growth and averaged 3.9%.

For wider context, the same source estimates U.S. radio ad revenue at $10.7 billion in 2014, $8.9 billion in 2019, $6.5 billion in 2020 and $7.6 billion in 2022. Its 2024 forecast was $7.1 billion, which is a forecast rather than an observed result.
Radio Audience Reach and Listening Time Statistics
Nielsen/Edison data for Q1 2024 measures ad-supported audio time among U.S. consumers, not total audio listening or revenue. Radio received nearly 70% of daily ad-supported audio time, compared with 20% for podcasts, and more than 80% of in-car ad-supported audio time went to radio.
International reach measures use different populations and methods. In Norway during 2024, daily net radio reach was 58% and weekly net radio reach was 83.1%; Nielsen’s methodology changed, which affects comparability.
| Market or service | Period | Audience measure |
|---|---|---|
| Norway radio | 2024 | 58% daily net reach |
| Norway radio | 2024 | 83.1% weekly net reach |
| Bauer Media Audio UK | Q4 2024 | 21.893 million weekly listeners |
| BBC Radio 1 | Q4 2024 | 7.537 million weekly listeners |
| Absolute Radio Network | Q4 2024 | 5.611 million weekly listeners |
| Radio X Brand UK | Q4 2024 | 2.430 million weekly listeners |
Source for Norway: Nielsen Releases The Record. Source for UK reach: RAJAR, Quarterly Summary of Radio Listening: survey period ending 15 December 2024.
RAJAR’s Q4 2024 estimates add listening intensity to reach. Bauer Media Audio UK averaged 9.1 hours per listener and recorded 198.473 million total hours, while BBC Radio 1 averaged 6.8 hours and recorded 50.913 million total hours.
Absolute Radio Network averaged 6.7 hours per listener and recorded 37.608 million total hours. Radio X Brand UK averaged 7.4 hours and recorded 18.050 million total hours; these are survey estimates with the source’s period labels.
Commercial Radio Formats and Station Audience Data
Format shares describe the distribution of combined radio listening among U.S. adults aged 18 and over in Q1 2024. They are not shares of advertising revenue and use a format-specific denominator.
| Format | Combined radio listening | Streaming-only station listening |
|---|---|---|
| News/Talk | 10.8% | 21.7% |
| Adult Contemporary | 8.6% | Not supplied |
| Classic Hits | 5.9% | Not supplied |
| Country | 5.9% | Not supplied |
| All Sports | Not supplied | 8.6% |
Source: Nielsen Releases The Record.
News/Talk therefore appears at 10.8% for combined radio listening and 21.7% for streaming-only station listening in the supplied Q1 2024 measure. The difference is a reminder that format shares can change when the listening universe changes.
Adult Contemporary represented 8.6% of combined radio listening, while Classic Hits and Country each represented 5.9%. All Sports accounted for 8.6% of streaming-only station listening, and no combined-listening figure was supplied for that format.

Audio Advertising Growth, Measurement and Campaign Outcomes
Broader audio measures combine formats that should not be equated with terrestrial broadcast radio. In the UK, commercial audio advertising revenue reached £863.4 million in the 12 months to Q3 2024 and grew 5.5%; the measure includes radio, podcasts and streaming.
Commercial broadcasters accounted for 86% of UK total audio ad revenue in the same period. That estimate includes broadcast radio, live radio via IP and broadcaster-hosted podcasts.

In the United States, IAB/PwC reported 2024 digital audio revenue of $7.6 billion, up 8.5%. The category includes podcasting and related digital formats, so it is broader than terrestrial broadcast-radio advertising.
U.S. podcast advertising revenue grew 26.4% in 2024. This is an observed podcast-advertising growth measure, not a radio-revenue growth rate.

Across these datasets, revenue, digital sales, audience reach, listening time, format share and advertiser spend answer different questions. Keeping the population, geography, period, currency and measurement definition attached to each statistic is essential when assessing radio advertising scale or outcomes.
