Audio Advertising Market Size and Podcast Revenue Trends
IAB/PwC reported U.S. digital podcast advertising revenue, which is a podcast-only measure rather than the entire audio advertising market. The observed series shows growth from 2019 through 2024.
| Period | U.S. podcast advertising revenue |
|---|---|
| 2019 | $708.1 million |
| 2020 | $842.3 million |
| 2021 | $1,448.7 million |
| 2022 | $1,825.3 million |
| 2023 | $1,925.2 million |
| 2024 | $2,433.1 million |
Source: IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report: Full Year 2024.
Podcast advertising grew 26.4% year over year in 2024. Podcast advertising represented 0.9% of total U.S. digital advertising revenue in 2024, while total U.S. digital advertising revenue reached $258.6 billion and increased 14.9% year over year.
These shares describe podcast advertising within digital advertising, not a share of all audio advertising. The IAB/PwC figures are digital podcast advertising revenue and should not be presented as radio, streaming audio and podcast revenue combined.
Podcast and Online-Audio Audience Statistics
Edison Research’s January 2025 survey measured Americans age 12 and older. Its podcast and online-audio measures are related but distinct, and the population estimates are derived from the survey percentages.
| January 2025 measure | U.S. age-12-plus result |
|---|---|
| Ever listened to a podcast | 70% |
| Ever watched a podcast | 51% |
| Consumed a podcast in audio or video | 73% |
| Monthly podcast consumption | 55% |
| Monthly online-audio listening | 79% |
| Listened to and watched a podcast | 48% |
Source: The Infinite Dial 2025.
The combined audio-or-video podcast measure represented an estimated 210 million Americans age 12 and older. Monthly online-audio listening represented an estimated 228 million Americans age 12 and older, reflecting the broader definition of online audio.
Audience behavior also differed by platform and subgroup. Among weekly podcast listeners, 33% used YouTube most often to listen to podcasts; monthly podcast listening was 57% among U.S. men age 12 and older and 52% among U.S. women age 12 and older.
The Edison figures are weighted national survey results and listening is self-reported. Video podcast viewing is measured separately from listening, so the figures should not be added together.
Audio Advertising Brand-Lift and Purchase Outcomes
Nielsen’s Podcast Brand Impact Norms Database reported benchmark results for podcast ad campaigns in Q2 2024. These are database averages, not randomized estimates for every campaign or universal sales conversion rates.
| Nielsen benchmark outcome | Average result in Q2 2024 |
|---|---|
| Awareness lift | 10 percentage points |
| Information-seeking lift | 7 percentage points |
| Purchase intent or purchase outcome measure lift | 6 percentage points |
| Recommendation lift | 6 percentage points |
| Exposed audience recalling the advertising | 70% |
| Exposed audience saying the brand was a good fit | 64% |
| Exposed audience rating the host positively | 63% |

The purchase row uses the funnel-stage label shown by Nielsen and does not verify completed sales. Likewise, recall, fit and host ratings are benchmark measures among exposed audiences, not prevalence estimates for the entire U.S. population.
A separate 2021 Spotify study compared digital audio advertising with an all-media norm among study participants. It reported that digital audio advertising was 29% more engaging, 20% more memorable and 19% higher in brand breakthrough than the comparison norm.

The Spotify result is a voluntary-participant study comparison, so it should be interpreted as a study finding rather than a universal causal estimate for all audio campaigns.
Digital Audio Ad Creative and Engagement Statistics
Spotify’s 2023 Neuro-Insight study examined creative-format comparisons among study participants. The results describe relative changes in study metrics, not reach, completed purchases or guaranteed campaign performance.
| Creative feature or comparison | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Content-to-ad engagement transference | 103% of the all-media norm |
| Multiple-character ads and Brand Impact | Up to 26% increase |
| Multiple genders’ voices and Brand Impact | 24% increase |
| Informational versus entertaining ads: memorability | 21% higher |
| Informational versus entertaining ads: engagement | 20% higher |
| Offers and promotions: memorability | 30% higher |
| Offers and promotions: engagement | 34% higher |

The study also reported context-specific findings for music and podcast ads:
- Naming the brand within the first five seconds made ads 17% more engaging in music contexts.
- Informational podcast ads generated 25% more Global Memory than entertaining podcast ads.
- Celebrity voices increased Engagement by 18% in Spotify music-playlist ads.
- Celebrity voices increased Emotional Intensity by 21% in Spotify podcast ads.
- More than one character increased podcast-ad Brand Impact by 28%.
- A podcast offer or promotion increased ad Engagement by 33%.
- Introducing the brand in the first five seconds increased podcast-ad Brand Impact by 28%.
- Introducing the brand in the first five seconds increased podcast Detail Memory by 16%.
These comparisons are not interchangeable: the study used different creative contexts and metrics, including Engagement, Brand Impact, Global Memory, Detail Memory and Emotional Intensity. The reported percentages therefore indicate relative study differences, not a common advertising-sales scale.
Radio Advertising Revenue and Advertiser Mix
Urban One’s 2024 Form 10-K provides company-specific radio and digital revenue figures. They are useful as a reporting example, but they do not represent the whole radio advertising market.
| Urban One measure | 2024 result | Comparison or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Radio advertising revenue | $175.731 million | $182.362 million in 2023 |
| Radio advertising change | 3.6% decline | 2024 versus 2023 |
| Digital advertising revenue | $66.992 million | 10.5% decline in 2024 |
| Local advertising share | 59.8% | Core radio-business revenue |
| National advertising share, including network advertising | 35.2% | Core radio-business revenue |
| Radio Broadcasting share of consolidated net revenue | 36.9% | Urban One, Inc. |
Source: Urban One, Inc. Form 10-K for year ended December 31, 2024.
Urban One recognized approximately $165.8 million from its Radio Broadcasting segment in 2024, and that segment’s revenue increased approximately $9.6 million year over year. The filing attributes the segment change primarily to political revenue and acquisition effects, so the change should not be treated as an underlying industry growth rate.
Urban One’s local and national mix table includes related digital and low-power-television advertising in the stated subset. Its digital segment also includes more than audio advertising, while Radio Broadcasting segment revenue includes more than advertising.
